Allen County, Kansas

was founded in 1855, one of the 33 counties established by the first territorial legislature. It was named in honor of William Allen, United States senator from Ohio.

Allen County is located in southeastern Kansas and covers over 500 square miles. The county seat is Iola. The population (2020) is 12,526. Iola is located approximately 100 miles from the major cities of Kansas City, Wichita, and Tulsa, in fertile farming country along the Neosho River. It is serviced by three major highways — US-169, US-54, and US-59 — as well as the Union Pacific Railroad. The neighboring counties are Anderson (north), Linn (northeast), Bourbon (east), Crawford (southeast), Neosho (south), Wilson (southwest), Woodson (west), and Coffey (northwest).
